1.2recognizing April 21, 2007, as Emmett Till Legacy Foundation Day at the
1.3State Capitol.
1.4WHEREAS, Emmett Till, a young African-American man, was brutally murdered on
1.5August 12, 1955, at the age of 14; and
1.6WHEREAS, the murder, attempted cover-up, and subsequent delay of justice became
1.7the spark for a generation's commitment to social change through the American Civil Rights
1.8Movement; and
1.9WHEREAS, the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation is dedicated to the continuing work of
1.10turning this painful segment of our history into a positive future by helping our youth and others
1.11to reach their fullest potential; and
1.12WHEREAS, the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation seeks to teach others to use nonviolent
1.13means to eliminate the effects of violence, hatred, and racism; and
1.14WHEREAS, the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation encourages and creates a spirit of legacy
1.15building by providing an ongoing platform for passing intergenerational knowledge, experience,
1.16history, and a sense of purpose to future leaders; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.17BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it recognizes Saturday,
1.18April 21, 2007, as Emmett Till Legacy Foundation Day at the State Capitol.
1.19BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.20enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Chair of the
2.1Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the offices of the Emmett Till
2.2Legacy Foundation.
