  1.1                         A senate resolution 
  1.2             recognizing and commending the International Adhesions 
  1.3             Society for its efforts in promoting awareness of 
  1.4             adhesions and supporting patients with adhesions. 
  1.5      
  1.6      WHEREAS, adhesions related disorder is a serious medical 
  1.7   condition that affects many citizens in the state of Minnesota; 
  1.8   and 
  1.9      WHEREAS, adhesions are internal scars that frequently occur 
  1.10  after surgery and can grow to connect internal organs not 
  1.11  normally connected, leading to chronic pain, recurrent bowel 
  1.12  obstruction, and infertility; and 
  1.13     WHEREAS, in extreme cases some patients have had to endure 
  1.14  over 20 operations to remove adhesions because of the propensity 
  1.15  for regrowth of scar tissue; and 
  1.16     WHEREAS, adhesions related disorder may become so severe 
  1.17  that patients are unable to work; obtaining health care or 
  1.18  disability insurance is difficult; family life is devastated; 
  1.19  and the emotional health of adhesions sufferers is severely 
  1.20  affected, leading to life-threatening depression and isolation; 
  1.21  and 
  1.22     WHEREAS, hospital admissions for adhesions related disorder 
  1.23  number over 300,000 per year, rivaling those for heart bypass, 
  1.24  appendix, and other common operations, yet the awareness of this 
  1.25  serious condition is relatively low; and 
  2.1      WHEREAS, the lack of awareness about adhesions and 
  2.2   adhesions related disorder means that many doctors do not 
  2.3   understand the condition and are unable to treat adhesions; 
  2.4   insurance companies are also unwilling to pay for treatment; and 
  2.5   patients' efforts to get well are continually frustrated; and 
  2.6      WHEREAS, the International Adhesions Society was formed in 
  2.7   1996 to promote awareness about adhesions, to provide support to 
  2.8   patients and information to medical professionals, and to 
  2.9   encourage research into adhesions and their prevention; and 
  2.10     WHEREAS, in recognition of the debilitating effects 
  2.11  adhesions related disorder has had on those afflicted, it is 
  2.12  incumbent upon the citizens of the state of Minnesota to support 
  2.13  the courageous individuals living and coping with this painful 
  2.14  condition; and 
  2.15     WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Senate to acknowledge and 
  2.16  call attention to the International Adhesions Society in its 
  2.17  efforts to increase awareness regarding health issues which 
  2.18  affect residents of the state of Minnesota; NOW, THEREFORE, 
  2.19     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that 
  2.20  it recognizes and commends the International Adhesions Society 
  2.21  in its efforts to promote awareness of adhesions and support 
  2.22  patients with adhesions. 
  2.23     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  2.24  directed to prepare an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be 
  2.25  authenticated by his signature and that of the Senate Majority 
  2.26  Leader, and transmit it to the International Adhesions Society.
