Press Release: State Employee Contract Legislation

VIDEO LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVk6HnXDHwE

PAPPAS PRESS STATEMENT:

As chair of the State and Local Government Committee, I was proud to pass the state employee contract legislation for local nurses, prison guards, state troopers, veterans’ officers and snow plow operators among others. The employee contracts provide a modest 2% wage increase for more than 22,500 workers -- their first wage increase of any kind in more than 3.5 years.

If the contract passes, it also asks state employees to pay more for their health insurance. This health insurance cost increase for state employees provides nearly $8 million in health care savings for the state. During this time of budget deficits, it is important to note the state employee contracts will not cost Minnesota taxpayers a dime. There is no new spending; state agencies must find savings within their existing budgets to pay for the state employee wage increases.

The bill will continue to make its way through the committee process and before it is heard on the floor of the Minnesota Senate.
