Metzen to Chair Commerce

St. Paul, Minn.--This week Sen. Jim Metzen, DFL-South St. Paul, was appointed to chair of the Senate Commerce Committee. The committee has oversight over the Department of Commerce which regulates businesses licensing, weights and measures, insurance and consumer protection issues.

Sen. Metzen was appointed to the committee by a group of his peers. “I am humbled by the confidence my fellow legislators have shown in me by appointing me chair,” said Sen. Metzen. Senate Majority Leader-designate Tom Bakk added, “Given Jim’s leadership, business background and ability to build consensus with various stakeholders, this was an easy decision for our caucus.”

Sen. Metzen’s priorities include streamlining licensing activities and protecting consumers from businesses that operate in a fraudulent manner. Sen. Metzen stated, “I believe through common sense we can safely look at easing red tape on businesses and successfully defend the rights of consumers.”
