STATEMENT FROM SENATOR DAVID HANN ON OBAMACARE RULING

St. Paul --- State Senator David Hann (R-Eden Prairie), Chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, issued the following statement upon the United States Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act:

“I am saddened to learn that the Supreme Court has abandoned the principle that the U.S. Constitution limits the power of Congress, and that the American people no longer have the right to participate in the health care system on their own terms without heavy mandates and penalties. However, even if the Court had struck down the mandate, the problems created by ObamaCare would remain.

This excessive intrusion by the Federal Government was enacted in the most partisan way conceivable – no Republicans voted for it and a number of Democrats voted against it. In addition, the court has made clear that the so-called mandate is in fact a tax of unprecedented size, which the President and supporters of the law have long denied. Unlike other major acts of Congress that were initially opposed by the public but later supported, the “Affordable Care Act” has consistently been opposed by ordinary citizens.

Those of us who have opposed this law have long understood that this partisan political overreach of Federal authority could only be corrected through the political process. That has been made abundantly clear this morning. We need to elect political leaders who are committed to limited government, and who will work to repeal this law and return decision making on health care to individual citizens and the several states.”
