SENATOR BENSON DEFENDS CITIZENS’ RIGHT TO VOTE ON VOTER ID

St. Paul- The Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) met Thursday to discuss litigation brought forth by special interest groups in an effort to remove the Photo Identification Constitutional Amendment from the ballot.

The Photo ID Amendment was passed by the state legislature earlier this year and is scheduled to appear on this November’s ballot. On May 30, 2012, special interest groups opposed to Photo ID filed a claim to block citizens from voting on the issue in 2012.

At the conclusion of Thursday’s meeting, the LCC adopted a formal resolution allowing the Senate and House to intervene in litigation. Senator Michelle Benson (R-Ham Lake), a member of the LCC, voted in favor of the resolution.

“I believe that requiring photo ID prior to receiving a ballot will go a long way toward preventing errors and fraud that can cause Minnesotans to lose faith in the electoral process. The ballot question for voter ID is clear and concise and Minnesota citizens have a right to vote on the issue. This is a very important issue for citizens across our state, and as a member of the Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC), I will be working with my fellow legislators to ensure that this stays on the ballot this November,” said Senator Benson.
