SENATOR CARLA NELSON HONORED DURING CPR AWARENESS WEEK

St. Paul- Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) was recognized Thursday by the American Heart Association for sponsoring a bill bringing life-saving CPR training to our schools (HF 2506). The CPR training provision was combined with a measure to relieve schools of the 2 percent staff development funding mandate, allowing greater budgeting flexibility for local school districts. Together, these initiatives were signed into law by Governor Dayton.

“I’m honored to receive this award from the American Heart Association today. Their commitment to ensuring students know how to perform CPR will save lives and train a generation of life-savers,” said Senator Nelson.

Sudden Cardiac arrest strikes 42 people every hour in the United States including 6000 children each year. The survival rate for cardiac arrest that occurs outside the hospital is less than 7 percent but with bystander CPR the survival rate can triple.

“Thank you to the bill's bipartisan co-authors, Senators Dan Hall, Leroy Stumpf and Chuck Wiger and Representatives Mary Liz Holberg, Jenifer Loon, Mindy Greiling and Bob Dettmer for their support and to Governor Dayton for signing the bill. Also thank you to the Minnesota Resuscitation Society for providing schools the resources to teach students. This is a great example of a public-private partnership, the type of cooperation that will move Minnesota in the right direction,” concluded Senator Nelson.
