| STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JULIANNE ORTMAN ON TAX RELIEF VETO | ||||||||||||
St. Paul --- Deputy Majority Leader Julianne Ortman (R-Chanhassen), chair of the Senate Tax Committee, issued the following statement upon learning of Governor Mark Dayton’s veto of the latest tax relief bill:
“Governor Dayton had not one, but two chances to provide tax relief for families, homeowners, job creators and job seekers. We worked hard to compromise with the Governor and to earn his support. The bill he chose to veto had several provisions that would enable job creation and economic development. By the stroke of his veto pen, Gov. Dayton has turned his back on Minnesotans who needed urgent assistance and relief from the State as provided in this bill:
• Funds for 16,000 student loans, first time home buyers, and Small Business Administration loans,
• Sales tax exemptions for Minnesota nursing homes,
• Veterans hiring incentives,
• Funds for the dwindling Minnesota Investment Fund used for recruiting new businesses to Minnesota,
• Economic Development projects for 39 Minnesota Cities,
• The Mall of America Expansion project (estimated at 10,000 jobs),
• Angel Investor, Research & Development and Data Center tax credits that would make Minnesota a more attractive place to invest, and more competitive nationally,
• A one-year freeze on business property tax increases for businesses located in Minnesota (they would still pay local property taxes), and
• An up-front capital equipment sales tax exemption to encourage new orders and manufacturing of capital equipment for companies with up to 50 employees.
“By rejecting this tax relief bill, the Governor has demonstrated that he cares more about political talking points than the best interests of Minnesotans and our economic future.”
