SENATE MAJORITY LEADER DAVID SENJEM STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR VETO OF K-12 SHIFT REPAYMENT

St. Paul- Senate Majority Leader David Senjem (R-Rochester) gave the following statement in response to the Governor's veto of House File 2083.

"I am disappointed with the Governor's decision today to veto legislation that would speed up the scheduled school aid payments that were delayed as part of the agreement he made last year with the legislature. Our proposal was fiscally responsible -- leaving over one-half billion dollars in the state's budget reserve and cash-flow accounts -- that's the most cash on hand our state has had since 2008. We received great news in February with the budget surplus and we are in a position now to make good on our promise to our schools by reducing the shift. The Governor's decision today is not only a disappointment to legislators who worked to restore this funding but more so to schools and our students who directly benefit from those dollars in the classroom. At some point the Governor needs to realize that Republicans can have some good ideas. We reached out to him, we removed the additional provisions of which he strongly objected. It is time for the Governor to not just act for the DFL election strategy but to actually act in the best interests of Minnesota - in this case the best interests of Minnesota school kids."
