| MAGNUS WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION TO STATE SENATE STATE SEN. DOUG MAGNUS TO LEAVE PUBLIC OFFICE AFTER TEN YEARS OF SERVICE | ||||||||||||
(ST. PAUL) – After ten years in the legislature, Senator Doug Magnus (R-Slayton) will not seek re-election to the State Senate. Magnus currently represents District 22, which includes Cottonwood, Jackson, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone and Rock counties in the southwestern corner of the state.
“I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to represent my community at the Capitol. However, I feel that it is time for me to step aside and give another Minnesotan the chance to serve,” Magnus said. “At the end of this term, I will have been in the legislature for ten years and, for me, that is enough. It is best for the constituents of Southwest Minnesota to send someone to Saint Paul who can bring new and innovative ideas to government.”
Magnus, 61, was elected to his first term in the State Senate in 2010 after previously serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2003-2010. He currently serves as the chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Economies Committee. Magnus, a fourth-generation farmer, is a well-known advocate for agriculture issues at the Capitol. As a veteran of the Vietnam War, he is a strong supporter of the state’s service men and women. He also serves on the Committees for Capital Investment, Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications and Finance.
Majority Leader David Senjem (R-Rochester) commented on Magnus’ retirement: “Senator Magnus has personified the role of citizen-legislator during his service in the Senate and House. He has been a strong voice for southern Minnesota’s agriculture industry and energy needs while helping to return the state budget to a positive balance. His common-sense and unique humor will be missed.”
“The time I have spent in office has been fulfilling. I am honored to have served southwest Minnesota for the past ten years. While I await retirement and the opportunity to spend more time with my family, I look forward to the remainder of my final session. I will keep working hard to find solutions to the important issues that face Minnesota,” Magnus concluded.
Senator Magnus can be reached at 651-296-5650 or via email at sen.doug.magnus@senate.mn.
