| MINNESOTA SENATE PASSES SEX OFFENDER COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION BILL | ||||||||||||
St. Paul --- Today the Minnesota Senate passed an important bill that amends current community notification laws. The bill closes a loophole in the community notification process when a high level sexual predator gets transferred into a half-way house in the community. The gap in the law was revealed during a House committee hearing last week.
Upon passage of the bill, Deputy Majority Leader Julianne Ortman (R-Chanhassen), the Chief Author of the bill, offered the following statement:
“Ensuring the safety of all Minnesota residents is a core, constitutional function of government and today the Senate agreed with the House and Governor Dayton that this is a serious matter that needed to be dealt with quickly. The public has the right to know when a high risk offender is transferred into the community and no political or bureaucratic process should ever get in the way. I am pleased that this bill passed with unanimous support.”
In a recent letter to House Republican Leadership, Governor Dayton indicated that he intends to support the measure and sign it into law.
