SENATOR PAUL GAZELKA APPOINTED TO SUNSET COMMISSION

Brainerd- Senator Paul Gazelka (R-Brainerd) was appointed to the newly-created Sunset Commission by Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch (R-Buffalo). The Legislature created the Sunset Commission as part of the 2011 Sunset Act(See Article 3). The commission will review state agencies and advisory committees to determine 12 key performance factors, including: efficiency and effectiveness, the extent to which the agency is meeting its goals and objectives and the amount of overlap and duplication with other agencies.

“I am honored to be part of the newly establish Sunset Commission. We will focus primarily on reviewing agencies and the services they deliver to determine what programs are redundant. This is part of our overall effort to streamline government and protect taxpayer dollars,” said Senator Gazelka. “Because Health and Human Services consume such a large part of our overall budget, we are going to be looking at health boards first. Based on our findings, we will make recommendations for ending, continuing or reorganizing each aspect of state government. States like Texas have been doing this since the 1970s and have saved their state over a billion dollars to date. I look forward to beginning work with the Commission and taking the necessary steps to take ensure the sustainability of Minnesota government.”
