| SEN. SENJEM TO SERVE ON CAPITOL BUILDING PRESERVATION BOARD | ||||||||||
(ST. PAUL) – Senator David Senjem of Rochester has accepted an appointment to serve on a state board that will work on a major restoration plan for Minnesota’s 106-year old Capitol building in Saint Paul. Senjem, who was one of the authors of a bill creating the Capitol Preservation Commission and is the Senate Chair of the Capital Investment (Bonding) Committee, will be one of 22 members of the multi-year commission which will also include four citizens appointed by the governor.
Senjem said the commission will study and prioritize what repair work is necessary in the historic building, which opened in 1905. This will include structural deficiencies, building and safety code issues, and disability accessibility inadequacies.
“While many short-term problems have been addressed in recent years, we are finding evidence that problems are beginning to arise that must be addressed for the long-term,” Senjem said. “This beautiful building is an icon of our state and must not be allowed to fall into serious disrepair. This commission will help us set priorities to target the most vital needs.”
The Capitol Building hosts more than 250,000 visitors annually.
