SENATOR MAGNUS APPOINTED TO CENTER FOR RURAL POLICY AND DEVELOPMENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS

St. Paul – Senator Doug Magnus (R-Slayton), Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, was appointed to the Center for Rural Policy and Development Board of Directors.

The Center for Rural Policy and Development is a non-partisan, non-profit policy research organization based in St. Peter, Minnesota. The Center’s mission is to benefit Minnesota by providing policy makers “with an unbiased evaluation of issues from a rural perspective.” Sen. Magnus was appointed to the board by the Senate Rules Committee and will serve a two year term.

“I appreciate the appointment to the Center for Rural Policy and Development board of directors, and I look forward to working with fellow members and staff on improving Greater Minnesota,” commented Senator Magnus. “Greater Minnesota faces unique challenges that will require a thorough and objective examination of the issues and policy options available. Together with agriculture organizations, educators, business leaders, local and state officials, and citizens, we can provide legislators and policy makers the information needed to successfully meet these challenges and create a foundation for economic growth.”

Members of the board of directors will work closely with the staff of the Center for Rural Policy and Development to provide strategic direction, set research priorities, and enhance the presence of the Center in the rural policy community. Specifically, Sen. Magnus duties’ will include assistance in the following:

· Research and identify present and emerging social and economic issues for rural Minnesota, including health care transportation, crime, housing, and job training.

· Forge alliances and partnerships with rural communities to find practical solutions to economic and social problems.

· Provide a resource center for rural communities on issues of importance to them.

· Encourage collaboration across higher education institutions to provide interdisciplinary team approaches to problem solving with rural communities.

The Center was established into law under statute 116J.421 Rural Policy and Development Center.
