Due to the Shutdown, Sen. Sheran Won’t Accept Salary

State Sen. Kathy Sheran today announced that because of the government shutdown beginning July 1, she will not be accepting her Senate salary.

There is a stalemate between GOP legislative leaders and the Governor over how to solve a $5 billion state budget deficit. With no agreement reached by June 30, the state has shut down and many government services have stopped.

“While I hope that an equitable solution to our budget crisis can be found, I have notified the Senate’s human resources office that due to the shutdown, I will not accept my Senate salary,” she said.

Over 20,000 state employees have been temporarily laid off, including those who work in health and transportation, others have been furloughed and will not receive paychecks.

“For me, refusing my salary during a shutdown is the appropriate action to take,” Sen. Sheran said.
