Reinert Disappointed in Need for Special Session

Midnight on Monday May 23rd was the constitutional adjournment deadline for the 2011 Minnesota Senate. The Senate did adjourn a few minutes before midnight, but without completing its most important legislative task: completing a balanced budget.

“I am disappointed that the legislature has not completed this task,” said Senator Reinert. “There has been zero progress since the Governor offered a compromise on the budget bill two weeks ago. So we adjourn tonight and the one and only mandated job of the Legislature – to create a balanced budget for the next two years for the State of Minnesota – remains undone.”

Talks between the Governor and legislative leaders will continue. But until a compromise is reached, the state remains in a precarious financial position. “If a solution is not reached by July 1st, state government in Minnesota will begin to shut down,” said Senator Reinert.

Once a budget agreement is reached, the Governor will have to call the legislature into Special Session to debate and pass the bills. The date and length of the special session is yet to be determined.
