SENATOR DOUG MAGNUS ON PASSAGE OF AGRICULTURE AND RURAL ECONOMIES OMNIBUS BILL

St. Paul – The Senate Agriculture and Rural Economies Omnibus budget bill for FY2012-13 passed in the State Senate by a bi-partisan vote of 39-25. The legislation, Senate File 1016, appropriates $76,840,000 of general fund dollars to the Agriculture and Rural Economies budget. The bill will be sent to the Governor for consideration, pending final passage of the House counterpart and conference committee modifications as necessary.

Senate Agriculture and Rural Economies Chair Doug Magnus (R-Slayton) stated today:

“This budget funds and protects our priorities of livestock and grain industries, the health and safety of our food supply system, and our ever-increasing export programs. Agriculture is strong today because of our farmers, producers, researchers and advocates. We thank them for their work with the legislature and Department of Agriculture in identifying and addressing these priorities and how we can best move forward in these difficult economic times.

Minnesota has the sixth largest state agriculture economy in the nation and the continued health and growth of this industry is vital to a full economic recovery in Minnesota. Critical components of the continued stability and long-term health of the industry are research efforts and the promotion of livestock and animal health. In providing continued funding for these efforts in addition to our current priorities, we passed a budget that provides for a strong Minnesota agriculture economy now and in the future.”
