| SENATOR DeKRUIF BILL FOR DISABLED MOTORCYCLE PLATES APPROVED BY TRANSPORTATION PANEL | ||||||||||||
(ST. PAUL) – The Senate Transportation Budget & Policy Committee has approved a measure sponsored by Senator Al DeKruif (R- Elysian) that will ensure Minnesota drivers will be able to get an additional handicapped license plate for motorcycles, along with their standard vehicle plates.
Current law allows drivers only one vehicle plate and a placard, although individuals may apply to the Council on Disability for a second set. When the requested second set is for motorcycles, the council has given general approval. DeKruif’s bill would put the approval, specifically for motorcycle owners, into law.
“This is common-sense idea,” DeKruif said. “The law had changed to prevent misuse of the plates, but as more and more riders take to bikes and trikes, the law needs to adapt.”
The measure now goes to the full Senate for approval. A House companion awaits hearing in committee.
Senator DeKruif is a member of the Senate Transportation, Jobs & Economic Development, and Education Budget & Policy committees, as well as the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources. He welcomes constituents to contact his Capitol office at 24G Capitol, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55155, by phone at 651-296-5558, or via email at sen.al.dekruif@senate.mn.
