| DEPUTY MAJORITY LEADER GEOFF MICHEL COMMENTS ON REDISTRICTING COMMISSION | ||||||||||||
(St. Paul) --- Deputy Majority Leader Geoff Michel (R-Edina), Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Redistricting, responded to today’s request for a new system of redistricting:
“We owe it to the citizens that elected us to perform the duty that we’re constitutionally obligated to do,” said Senator Michel. “Every ten years, the public expects the legislature to produce new Congressional and legislative maps that are a reflection of recent population figures. We should not back down from that challenge.”
Senator Michel added: “The Republican majorities in the legislature are positioned well to present a fair redistricting plan to a Governor from another political party. The bipartisan Senate subcommittee includes Minority Leader Tom Bakk, Senator Ann Rest and Senator John Harrington. We have been actively working with Governor Dayton’s office and seeking advice and counsel from multiple outlets. We share a common desire to present a plan that can be signed by Governor Dayton.”
