Sieben bill funds South St. Paul floodwall

State Sen. Katie Sieben, DFL-Cottage Grove, has introduced legislation to replace the South St. Paul floodwall. Her bill, S.F. 221, is co-authored with State Sen. Jim Metzen and authored in the House by Rep. Rick Hansen. It provides $2 million in bonds to demolish the old wall and pumping station and construct a new facility.

“Replacing the floodwall is important to protecting to City of South St. Paul from future flood damage,” explained Sen. Sieben. “Especially when we experience winters with heavy-snowfall like this past one, we need to have sound infrastructure in place to keep the rising river at bay. I will be pushing hard for the passage of this bill this session.”

Sen. Sieben added that she working to arrange a visit from Gov. Dayton to South St. Paul to demonstrate the importance of completing this project.

“The Governor has proposed a capital investment bill that funds shovel-ready infrastructure improvements throughout the state. Our floodwall would be an appropriate addition to that bonding package,” said Sen. Sieben. “I hope the Governor will come to see the poor condition of the existing floodwall and visit with the South St. Paul city officials. The Governor has been a strong advocate for flood preparation and has stressed the importance of sound infrastructure as an important component of Minnesota’s economy.”
