| SENATOR TED LILLIE WELCOMES WOODBURY RESIDENT & ARMY VETERAN SGT MARCUS KUBOY TO LEAD PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE IN SENATE | ||||||||||||
(ST. PAUL) – The Senate Republican Caucus announced last week a new initiative to have United States military veterans lead the Senate body in the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of session each Monday. The idea came from freshman Senator Ted Lillie (R-Lake Elmo) and Monday, one of Senator Lillie’s constituents will lead the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
“I am so honored to have Army SGT. Marcus Kuboy here today to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. He served with tremendous courage and is a true inspiration for us all. I am forever grateful for his sacrifice,” said Senator Ted Lillie. “It is a privilege to welcome SGT. Kuboy as we start this new tradition in the Senate.”
Marcus Kuboy, Retired Minnesota National Guard Army Sergeant, will lead the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance Monday. In March, 2007, SGT. Kuboy was wounded in a humvee explosion while serving in Iraq. SGT. Kuboy now resides in Woodbury, MN.
Historically, this new tradition is significant. Prior to 1991, the Pledge of Allegiance was never formally recited in the Senate Chamber. A military veteran will lead the Pledge of Allegiance on every Monday during session. On each Thursday of session, the Senate body will recite the Pledge of Allegiance with no formal guest lead. Monday’s proceedings mark the first time a military veteran will lead the Minnesota Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
