REPUBLICAN RURAL CAUCUS MEETS WITH CENTER FOR RURAL POLICY AND DEVELOPMENT EXPERT

(ST. PAUL) – The Republican Rural Caucus, composed of Republican members of the Minnesota House and Senate, meets regularly to discuss public policy issues important to rural Minnesota. Co-chairs Senator Doug Magnus (R-Slayton), Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and House counterpart Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) lead the meetings.

Brad Finstad, Executive Director of the Center for Rural Policy and Development, spoke to legislators from each region of Minnesota. Mr. Finstad offered a background on the non-partisan organization and presented an overview of some of the major characteristics and trends of Minnesota’s people and economy.

“Population, income, housing, education and health data from each of Minnesota’s geographic regions offers real insight into the overall picture of Minnesota and its people,” commented Mr. Finstad. “Explaining the data in an objective and unbiased manner provides a critically important examination of contemporary rural issues to our policy makers. Armed with that knowledge and understanding, legislators will be making informed, sound decisions-thus positioning rural Minnesota for a future of economic growth.”

Senator David Senjem (R-Rochester), a member of the caucus’ executive committee, added, “We were again pleased to have another rural policy expert share knowledge and insight with our group. My hope is that what is learned at these informational sessions can be translated into action which will lead to a growing and thriving Minnesota.” Carolyn McElfatrick (R-Deer River), a first-term legislator who is also on the executive committee, commented, “The regular, weekly access and exposure to these experts is invaluable. This strengthens our ability to support Speaker Zellers’ shared commitment to improving the quality of life in rural Minnesota.”

Representative Chris Swedzinski (R-Ghent), a farmer and first-term legislator stated, “The information obtained in these meetings is helpful when making important decisions for southwest Minnesota. I look forward to discussing and learning more in subsequent meetings about issues such as Local Government Aid, education funding, and transportation and infrastructure.”

The Republican Rural Caucus meets on a weekly basis and regularly invites policy experts, state leaders and others to participate in their discussions.
