| SENATOR DALEY OFFERS BILL FOR RETIRED VETERANS Measure would exempt income from state taxes | ||||||||||||
ST. PAUL) – Senator Ted Daley (R-Eagan) has introduced a bill to exempt military retirement income from Minnesota state taxes. Currently 31 states give tax benefits to active duty and military retirees. Nine other states have no individual income taxes.
“Minnesota continues to lose a great group of individuals because of this tax environment,” Daley said. “When men and women retire from the military, they can move anywhere in the world – many want to come home to the Midwest and to Minnesota, but they would end up paying more to do that. They are choosing not to come to Minnesota.”
Daley added that the bill would do more than acknowledge the service of veterans. “This also is a jobs bill. These retirees are demonstrated leaders, many ready to start or lead businesses,” he added. “They have a high volunteerism rate and bring their own health care plan and pension income. Minnesota needs to think in the long term and of the many positive outcomes this will have.”
A veteran of both the Gulf and Iraq wars, Daley introduced SF41, his first bill, last week. He serves as the vice chairman of the Senate State Government Innovation & Veterans Budget & Policy Committee.
