S.F. No. 2739 - Requiring Local Officials to File a Statement of Economic Interest

Author: Senator Justin D. Eichorn

Prepared By: Alexis C. Stangl, Senate Counsel (651/296-4397)

Date: February 28, 2018

S.F. No. 2739 requires all local officials to file a statement of economic interest.

A “local official” is defined as “a person who holds elective office in a political subdivision or who is appointed to or employed in a public position in a political subdivision in which the person has authority to make, to recommend, or to vote on as a member of the governing body, major decisions regarding the expenditure or investment of public money.” Minnesota Statutes, section 10A.01, subdivision 22. This definition is in current law and is not changed by this bill.

Under current law, some local officials are already required to file a statement of economic interest.  All county commissioners and all local officials in the metropolitan area currently file a statement of economic interest.
