S.F. No. 1768 - Insurance Coverage for Dependents of Deceased Volunteer Firefighters; Reporting Volunteer Firefighter Deaths (First Engrossment with A-1 Amendment)

Author: Senator Vicki Jensen

Prepared By: Krista Boyd, Senate Fiscal Analyst (651/296-7681)

Date: April 14, 2015

Section 1 provides that, when a volunteer firefighter is killed in the line of duty, the municipality that operates the fire department the volunteer firefighter serves with shall provide health insurance coverage to the volunteer firefighter’s dependents. The municipality shall pay the same level of contribution to cover the volunteer firefighter’s dependents as is currently required for a deceased professional firefighter’s dependents. Spousal insurance coverage continues as long as the spouse is a dependent, until the age of 65.  Coverage continues for the firefighter's other dependents to the age of 26.

Section 2 defines “volunteer firefighter” and “fire department” for purposes of section 1.

Section 3 requires the fire chief of a deceased firefighter to report the death to the state fire marshal. The notification must include the cause and circumstances of the death.
