S.F. No. 887 - Authorizing Filing Fees to be Set by Ordinance (First Engrossment)

Author: Senator Kent Eken

Prepared By: Alexis C. Stangl, Senate Counsel (651/296-4397)

Date: March 19, 2015

S.F. No. 887 gives cities the option to set filing fees by ordinance.  The existing filing fees remain in place as the default fees for towns and for cities that do not adopt an ordinance to set filing fees.  A cap on filing fees is imposed as follows:  $80 in first class cities; $40 in second and third class cities, and $15 in fourth class cities.  These caps do not apply to charter cities that set filing fees by authority of the city charter.
