S.F. No. 1283 - Capitol Area Security-Judiciary Issues

Author: Senator Michelle R. Benson

Prepared By: Kathleen Pontius, Senate Counsel (651/296-4394)

Date: March 1, 2012

Section 2 creates an advisory committee on Capitol Area Security.

Subdivision 3 contains administrative provisions and provides that meetings of the committee are subject to the Open Meeting Law.

Subdivision 4 provides that the committee is subject to the Data Practices Act.  The committee may request access to nonpublic data as necessary to fulfill its responsibilities.  A government entity receiving a request must provide nonpublic data if the entity reasonably determines that the data are relevant to the committee’s responsibilities under this section.  Language is included specifying that this does not give the committee access to firearms data or data on persons who are authorized to carry a pistol in state buildings.
