S.F. No. 146 - Data on Location of a National Night Out Event
Author: Senator Don Betzold
Prepared by: Kathleen Pontius, Senate Counsel (651/296-4394)
Date: February 5, 2003

This bill amends a provision of the Data Practices Act relating to the classification of security information to specify that the location of a National Night Out Event is public data.

The bill is in response to an advisory opinion issued by the Commissioner of Administration in October 2001, concluding that the location of a National Night Out Event is not public data because it comes under the definition of "security information" in section 13.37. Security information includes crime prevention block maps and lists of volunteers who participate in community crime prevention programs and their home addresses and telephone numbers.

A copy of section 13.37 is attached. In addition, the committee materials include a copy of the advisory opinion from the Commissioner of Administration.
