Education Committee
Youth Advisory Council

Overview

Senator Steve Kelley, Chair of the Senate Education Committee, and the members of the committee, have created a Youth Advisory Council to work in conjunction with the Education Committee. The Education Committee has a strong belief in active civic participation for all citizens and wants the Education Committee to lead by example in creating the Youth Advisory Council. The goals of the council are listed below.

  • Give Minnesota students a forum to debate policy issues and legislation that will affect them.
  • Provide the Senate Education Committee with input from students regarding policy issues.
  • Provide an opportunity for students to work with elected officials in creating legislation that will strengthen our public education system and ensure their academic success.

The Youth Advisory Council will hear about proposed legislation that will affect students and schools around the state.  The advisory council will also make recommendations to the Senate Education Committee on these proposed bills as well as any recommended changes or amendments. In addition they will meet approximately 2-3 times during the session to debate various education issues. The Council will be comprised of 21 students 10 students nominated by Education Committee members, 8 students representing each congressional district and 3 additional selected by the chair. Any and all students in grades 8-12 are encouraged to apply, whether attending public, charter, online or home schools.
